The Annual National Conference in Salt Lake City provided many people the opportunity to attend the 2015 Conference. We appreciate the brokers who were able to attend and learn about the needs of school nutrition professionals in Montana. The speakers were incredible and really do give you the boost of encouragement and remind us why we do what we do everyday.
Howie Long spoke in opening General Session about his challenges in growing up with a variety family members due to hardships in his family. Due to his financial situations, he grew up on macaroni and cheese with his Aunt and Uncle in Massachusetts. His Aunt Eddie was a school lunch professional and worked in the school Howie went to.
Favorite School Lunch: Milk and Peanut Butter on wonder white bread. No more white Bread Howie!
His Wife is his inspiration." A remarkable mom and inspires me to be better."
NFL players are getting bigger, stronger and faster. The players have evolved- and the change has come over time not overnight. It isn't much different then the changes we face in our profession. Changes are occurring with the change in times.
He talked of how he has raised his boys to respect others whether the person is less fortunate financially, physically or less fortunate in any way. His son Chris went homeless for two days to bring attention to the topic more prevalent that we want to admit. He is building solar wells in Tanzania due to the lack of good water. He is always teaching Howie in life as he strives to help others and do more. This is true of many of the school food service professionals when we work with students in the schools.
There was much more to Howie then many of us knew. His background of where he came from and how his life has evolved is amazing. His dedication to support philanthropic organizations is something to be proud of. Thank you Howie Long for all you do for support kids in our country!
Laura Schroff is an author of "Invisible Thread". She wrote this book to tell her story. All I can say is, WOW. What an inspiration of how a moment in time can change your life. I won't tell you much about her story as it is just so incredible that I will encourage you to read her book. Each of us have those life changing moments in life. Whether we pay attention or not is up to us!
Les Brown is known as a motivational speaker and has been so for many years. It was the first time I had heard of him and what a great motivational speaker he is! His message; "Step Into Your Greatness". He talked about his youth, his mother, the one that adopted him and many others. As a youth he was told he was "educable mentally retarded". A moment of a teacher encouraging him along with others along the way gave him what he needed to become a very wealthy man. He took advantage of his opportunities working as a broadcaster and becoming a state representative in Ohio. He has a laugh that is addictive. His words of advice, "People don't fail because they aim too high and miss but because they aim too low and hit". Les Brown has written many books and has a dvd out that is a great way to have him as a speaker with your staff.
I know that I sound like a promoter of these speakers but what I find in going to these conference is ways to share the information I receive with my staff members as well as use these opportunities to improve on my own skills, knowledge and to renew my faith in what I do. Some day's are really difficult and we may question why we do what we do. It is the moment we hear stories like those above or better yet, the moment you get the simple words from a child in your schools saying, "Thank You, you made my day" when you serve him lunch on an early out day.
Please share your stories with others around you as you might not know the good it will do. Have a Great Start to the New School
Year!

CHAPTERS
Have you thought about having a chapter in your Area?
Do you know what a chapter is?
Let's look and see what a chapter could mean for members...
A chapter in your area can benefit your school.
Think about how it feels to get together with your peers at conference at the end of the school year. You get inspired with tips and tricks of the trade and network with others.
The heart and soul of a chapter comes from members sharing ideas for training, fundraising, and events that you may want to do at your school.
Yes.... Some states have less miles to travel and more people in their chapters. The question is, do you have the commitment to your profession to go the extra mile?
Not only would you receive more education and training to further your skills and career, you also gain the friendship and support of peers across the state. A chapter also provides members with the opportunity to send representatives to the annual MTSNA conference.
LET'S GET CHAPTERS STARTED IN MONTANA!
